Archival Marble
Drawing on a selection of Cole & Son's historic Marbles and Scrumbles designs, Archival Marble embraces the artistry of decorative paint effects that once transformed interiors with the appearance of precious stone and finely finished surfaces. Popular throughout the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, scrumbles were specialist decorative techniques used to imitate natural materials, with scrumbling creating softly layered stone effects through translucent glazes and expressive brushwork. Described as 'Perfect Imitations of Real Marble', each marble-type was unique to that print run and customer, as if it were real stone.
Archival Marble brings together swirling veins of layered pigments and mineral-like textures into a sweeping striped composition that highlights the individuality of each marble effect. Echoing the craftsmanship of the original designs, colour appears to shift and deepen across the surface, creating a richness that feels both authentic and contemporary.
Intended to be hung horizontally, as many of the original patterns were, the broad bands accentuate a room's proportions whilst showcasing the movement and character within the design. Rich in texture and confident in scale, Archival Marble reimagines a decorative tradition for modern interiors, translating the beauty of historic faux finishes into a statement of enduring luxury.
