The Stanza Metafisica – the Metaphysical Room – is one of Piero Fornasetti's most ambitious creations. Conceived to "serve as a backdrop for the decoration of rooms intended for various uses", the 1958 one-of-one screen comprises 32 panels designed to be scaled up or down with removable sections: an endlessly adaptable work of art built around the idea that "one could take one's walls along." Now, Cole & Son has given that concept a new and permanent form.
Unveiled during Milan Design Week 2026 on the second floor of Fornasetti's Milanese flagship, the Stanza Metafisica room is anchored by a bespoke wallpaper created by Cole & Son's in-house artists. Part of the New Encounters installation conceived by design studio Tutto Bene, the space is one of four distinct living environments. Not a conventional retail setting, but a domestic stage for the everyday, a place to sit, exchange ideas, and experience Fornasetti. In this sense, the wallpaper does not only reference an archival work but rejuvenates its original purpose.

The design itself is a vast surrealist composition: stairways, passageways, and ladders rendered in the labyrinthine spirit of Fornasetti's original lithographic print. Faithfully translating the source material demanded the kind of exacting, interpretive craftsmanship for which Cole & Son is renowned. In-house artists worked to preserve the scale, understand the rhythm of the original, and render it anew on paper, preserving the tension and spatial disorientation that make the composition so arresting.
This is the heart of Cole & Son's long-standing collaboration with Fornasetti: not reproduction, but reinvention. Each piece in this shared canon involves a process of deep translation – a genuine dialogue between two houses whose commitment to craft, detail, and the decorative arts is equally nuanced. Here, that dialogue reaches one of its most ambitious expressions. Cole & Son has taken a rare, singular object and unfolded it into something continuous, and permanent.

Inside the eponymous room, the Stanza Metafisica does exactly what great wallcoverings should: it creates a world. Lacquered cabinets, porcelain objet, and sculptural lights frame the composition, which seems to shift and breathe as the eye moves across it. Cole & Son's trademark depth of line and tone are felt throughout; in the weight of the architectural forms, the precision of the passages, and the layered atmosphere that makes the room feel at once impossible and utterly real.
The 32 panels are, finally, fully unfurled. A work that was always designed to be lived in has, at last, found its home.
