Statement ceilings, whether calming and serene or all-out showstoppers, are a design trend that we are very much embracing. But if you’re unsure of how to take colour and pattern to new heights keep reading to discover our favourite and most innovative ceiling wallpaper ideas.
Having long been ignored in favour of minimalist shades of white, the ‘fifth wall’ is having a renaissance and adding non-woven wallpaper to your ceiling has never been easier (or more exciting!).
‘People can often feel unsure about how to approach adding pattern to their ceiling, but it offers so many opportunities,’ explains Cole & Son Creative & Managing Director, Marie Karlsson.
As with walls, there are a plethora of options to choose from: dense botanical canopies, delicate small-scale prints, bold stripes, or maybe uniform geometrics.
‘When choosing your scheme, look to the other items you’re coordinating with,’ says Marie, ‘a block colour or semi-plain design on the walls gives you free rein to add pattern to a ceiling without the interior feeling overdone.’
One way to ensure that your design scheme is harmonised is taking the same design from floor to ceiling and covering all five walls in a single motif.
‘Cloud prints can roll beautifully from one to the other without interruption; or take a lattice design onto the fifth wall for a truly striking look.’
Taking your chosen design onto a ceiling works in both grand, high-ceilinged spaces as well as little nooks and attics. In fact, adding wallpaper to eaves and sloping roofs can help the space feel welcoming and cosy, especially when using a smaller-scale pattern like a delicate floral or semi-plain.
If you’re feeling a little braver, a contrasting print is ideal for a space that “wows”.
‘By staying within the same colour palette, even very different prints can work together in harmony, like a classic stripe with a contemporary palm,’ Marie reveals.
By creating your very own version of a fresco, your wallpapered ceiling will feel both glamourous and intriguing, drawing the eye upwards every time you enter the room.
